History

In October 2008 a group of local citizens got together to see about the feasibility of establishing a transitional living center (sometimes called Recovery Home) for women recovering from drug addiction. These homes were first established in the U.S. in the 1940s, and have proven effective both in cost and saving lives ever since. There is not such a facility in our area and, of course, one is badly needed.

The Episcopal Diocese of WV also is aware of the plague and wants to help. Therefore they have leased us the Emanual Chapel and Callahan Fellowship Hall, a long unused facility 3 miles north of White Sulphur Springs at $10 per year for 20 years with written probable assurance that this lease may be continued in perpetuity if we maintain our mission. We plan to use the Chapel primarily for 12 Step, house and community meetings. Callahan Hall, when renovated, will be the living area. [NOTE: Oakhurst Outreach is not affiliated with the Episcopal Church in any other way. This is not a religious program, nor is it sponsored by any religious group.]

Our Board of Directors was formed in Spring 2009 and has been working diligently to raise enough money to renovate the Fellowship Hall to be the living quarters for 6 to 8 women. In our research we have found that often these recovery homes start with a population of 4 to 8 women, and once established expand to accomodate another 6 to 8 women.
